About the Miskolc Gallery of Fine Arts

A Miskolci Galériát - vidéken elsőként- a Budapesti Műcsarnok mintájára, 1967-ben hozta létre Miskolc város vezető testülete. A Galéria az eltelt évtizedekben sok száz rangos képzőművészeti, iparművészeti és fotóművészeti kiállításnak adott helyet. Az egyéni, csoportos bemutatkozások lehetősége mellett több visszatérő tárlatnak volt elindítója és gazdája (Országos Grafikai Biennále, Téli Tárlat, Rajzok, Jelmez és Díszlettervező Triennále, Ötvös és Fémműves Qvadriennále) és több történeti kiállítást is rendezett. 

Az intézmény az évek alatt művekkel és gyűjteményekkel gazdagodott (helyi és kiállító művészek alkotásai, kortárs grafika, kortárs fotográfia, Feledy Gyűjtemény, Szalay Gyűjtemény), és a gyűjteménygyarapodással egy időben új intézményekkel is bővült (1988: Feledy-ház, 1992: Petró-ház, 1996: Színháztörténeti-és Színészmúzeum). 1996-ban, majd 1999-ben került átadásra a Déryné utcai kiállítóhelyet kiváltó új központi épület a szépen felújított és kibővített Rákóczi-ház. 

Ezekben az intézményekben láthatja a közönség állandó kiállításokon a Szalay Lajos, Feledy Gyula, Kondor Béla munkásságát reprezentáló műveket és dokumentumokat, a miskolci színjátszásról keresztmetszetet nyújtó színháztörténeti anyagot és természetesen a Galéria kortárs művészettel foglalkozó időszaki kiállításait. 

Alkotóházában – melyet a régi művésztelepen 1987-ben alakított ki a város- egész évben vendégeket fogad itthonról és külföldről egyaránt.

Az intézmény 1995-ben kapott múzeumi rangot.

Feladata lett többek között a város képzőművészeti gyűjteményének gondozása, gyarapítása, őrzése és védelme, tudományos nyilvántartása és feldolgozása; 

Szerves részeként az Észak-magyarországi régióban és Miskolcon szerveződő művészeti életnek időszakos és állandó kiállítások rendezése, kiadványok megjelentetése, tudományos konferenciák, előadások, tanfolyamok, társművészeti rendezvények szervezése;

Együttműködés hazai és nemzetközi társintézményekkel, az MTA Miskolci Akadémiai Bizottságával, a Széchenyi Irodalmi és Művészeti Akadémiával és a Miskolci Egyetemmel;

Alkotóházában hazai és határon túli művészek fogadása, művészeti alkotótáborok, telepek szervezése;

A Színháztörténeti-és Színészmúzeum szakmai működtetése és a város színháztörténeti gyűjteményének gondozása.

A Miskolci Galéria és a régió művészeti életét segíti az 1995-ben alapított Szépmesterségek Alapítvány. Az intézménnyel karöltve ez az Alapítvány a kiadója az Új Holnap című művészeti, irodalmi és társadalmi folyóiratnak.

About the Miskolc Gallery of Fine Arts

The Miskolc Gallery of Fine Arts - the first of its kind outside the capital - was founded in 1967 by the governing body of the city of Miskolc following the example of the Budapest "Műcsarnok" (Art Gallery). The Miskolc Gallery of Fine Arts has given home to hundreds of significant exhibitions of visual arts (fine art, applied arts and photo-art). The institution has hosted and started several 'returning' events besides its usual individual and group exhibitions (National Biennial Exhibition of Graphic Art, Winter Show, Drawings, Triennial Exhibition of Costumes and Scenery, Quadriennial Exhibition of Goldsmith's and Metallic Arts). The Gallery has organized historical exhibitions as well.

The institution has been enriched with works of art and collections during the years of its existence (the pieces of local artists or of those exhibiting in Miskolc, contemporary graphics, contemporary photography, the Feledy-collection, the Szalay-collection). It was not only the quantity of the collection that grew but some new intsitutions were given to the Gallery of Fine Arts as well (Feledy House,1988; Petró House, 1992; Museum of Theatrical Arts and Actors,1996). 

The new building, the refurbished and enlarged Rákóczi House was formally opened in 1996 and 1999, replacing the old building in Déryné Street.

The audience can have a look at the permanent exhibitions representing the oeuvres of Lajos Szalay, Gyula Feledy and Béla Kondor - showing both works of art and documents. The material of the Actors' Museum gives a perfect picture of the history of the Miskolc stage. The temporary exhibitions of contemporary visual arts are open to the public as well.

The Miskolc Gallery of Fine Arts owns a 'House of Creators' - shaped up in 1987 from the former 'Colony of Artists' - which hosts Hungarian and foreign guests all year round.

The instituion of the Gallery was advanced to the 'museum'-rank in 1995.

Besides several other responsibilities the Gallery got the function of collecting, guarding and maintaining the artistic collection belonging to the property of the city as well as the scientific registering and research-work concerning the material; being one of the most important artistic institutions of the region of North-Hungary the Gallery has to organize permanent and temporary exhibitions representing regional and local fine art; the instituion has to take care of publications, and organize scientific conferences, lectures, courses and events of visual and attendant arts; the Gallery cooperates with institutions both Hungarian and foreign, furthermore the local ones: the Miskolc Academic Commitee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Széchenyi Academy of Literature and Fine Arts and the University of Miskolc; the institution accepts Hungarian and foreign artists, organizes camps of creative activity and artists'colonies in its 'House of Creators'; the Gallery operates the Actors' Museum and takes care of the collection of the history of theatrical arts of the city.

There is an Internet-Gallery functioning on the ground floor of the Rákóczi House, and the Information Office of the Gallery can be found on the same spot.

The Foundation of Arts (established in 1995) is qualified to help and support the artistic life of the region and the Gallery of Fine Arts. The artistic, literary and social journal ÚJ HOLNAP ('New Tomorrow') is edited by the cooperation of the Foundation and the Gallery.
